What the Sunnah teaches
The most beloved names
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The most beloved of your names to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman.” (Sahih Muslim 2132)
Names of the Prophets and the righteous
The Prophet ﷺ named his own son Ibrahim, after Prophet Ibrahim (Sahih Muslim 2315). Names of the Companions and of good people are also a fine choice.
A good meaning matters
The Prophet ﷺ changed names that had a bad meaning (Sahih Muslim 2139). A name in any language — Arabic, Persian or Urdu — is fine when its meaning is good.
Names that belong only to Allah
Names such as Ar-Rahman or Al-Khaliq belong to Allah alone, so a child is named “Abdur-Rahman” (servant of the Most Merciful), not “Rahman”.
Naming your child — FAQs
When should a baby be named?
The Sunnah is to name the child by the seventh day, together with the aqiqah (Sunan at-Tirmidhi 1522). Naming on the day of birth is also allowed — the Prophet ﷺ named his son Ibrahim on the night he was born.
Can we choose an Urdu or Persian name?
Yes. A name does not have to be Arabic. What matters is a good meaning and that it is not a name belonging only to Allah or a name with a wrong meaning.
How are the meanings checked?
We list only names whose meaning or bearer is well known, with Qur’an and hadith references where they apply. When the linguistic meaning of an old name is uncertain, we name the person it honours instead.
